Diversity as an asset: the cultural approach to migration
Description
Migration is a complex and multifaceted phenomenon that should be considered as a cultural issue: that means to look thoroughly at the individual and collective subjectivities that constitute the migration multitude. The geographical space where these subjectivities act and by which cultural identities are shaped is very wide: it includes their home and receiving countries as well as the whole European context and further. All teachers, trainers and educators working in a multicultural environment need to understand in deep the phenomenon and own the proper tools to face their daily challenges.
The training course takes place in five-six working days. The course is divided into two sessions: key theoretical issues to be developed with experts and scholars that will present some innovative tools to face the general issue; visits and practical workshops are held to produce simulations and explore the key concepts discussed in the morning. These sessions are to be seen as an actual way to test the theoretical proposals, through the direct confrontation with opinion leaders, key witnesses, association members. The last day is dedicated to setting up follow-up activities and discuss thematic proposals depending on participants' main interests.
Objectives
The training course aims at offering an updated key to interpret the migration phenomenon and its related issues, in order to allow all those professionals (teachers, social operators, adult educators, researchers, …) working in a multicultural environment to better understand the problems they deal with on a daily base and enhance their skills through the acquisition of new tools and teaching/operating methodologies.
Methodology
Through a complementary theoretical and practical approach, the methodology has been developed in order to bring participants to reflect and raise awareness on teaching and operating in a multicultural environment and provide them with innovative and effective tools for enhancing their competences.
Front class modality is limited as much as possible, giving large space to interaction and fostering the emerging of specific case-studies, while active participation is fostered during both theoretical and practical sessions. The international composition of the audience, including people with different cultural and professional backgrounds, represents an important added value of the course, because it allows mutual “contamination” (sharing of know-how and good practices, discussing different visions and perspectives) among participants. For this reason, debate and active participation is fostered by the trainers at all stages and specific ice-breaking and team building activities are planned in order to facilitate the exchange of experience and teamwork.
Translation will be limited to the very needed moments, i.e. the front classes: we want to foster a kind of interaction based on different types of communication and “languages”, in order to reproduce an actual multicultural and eterolinguistic environment.
The training sessions are supported by the intervention of community members, local stakeholders, opinion leaders and professionals operating in multiethnic environments. A tutored field survey also takes place in order to consolidate the learning outcomes and focus on key concepts.
Target group
The course is addressed to European school teachers, trainers, social operators, vocational and adult educators, volunteers, researchers, who deal in their working life and/or social activities with the migration phenomenon, i.e. work in a culturally diverse environment.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, participants have improved their key competences and skills on teaching and working in a multicultural environment and have raised awareness on migration related key issues, so that they can interact with their daily context through a more comprehensive and coherent approach.
In addition, participants will benefit from the following learning outcomes:
· increased capacity to cooperate at European and non-European level;
· incouragement of sharing know-how and best practices, ideas and materials among European and non-European colleagues;
· improved understanding of innovative didactic metods;
· acquisition of effective terminology to be used in the working environment.
Follow-up activities
In order to obtain the official certificate from the University of Roma Tre, all participants will be provided with all didactic materials in digital or printed material, which they can review as well as use for sharing their knowledge among colleagues within their organization and beyond.
In addition, a mailing list of participants will be created in order to exchange ideas/experiences.
Course provider
The Association Transgloblal was born with the aim of promoting real and active citizenship practices, valorization of diversity and cultures. Its main activities are teaching non-European languages and cultures, Italian for foreigners, analysis of the migration phenomenon, promotion of projects for cultural exchange between the communities living in metropolitan areas. Due to its long experience in the field, Association Transglobal collaborates with other associations dealing with the migration phenomenon both in Italy and other European countries and beyond, being involved in international cooperation projects.

Trainers
The course is run in its theoretical sessions by experts and scholars recognized as innovative and productive and partners of Associazione Transglobal. Other trainers will tutor the workshop and field sessions.
Course fee and certification
The total course fee is established by Erasmus+ criteria and includes attendance and training material, support to the organization of the mobility and a final certificate issued by the University of Roma Tre. In addition, all participants at the end of the course can also obtain a Europass Mobility, important to be included in any application for an Erasmus+ KA1 grant.
Course dates
The first edition of the training course is planned for the week from 6th to 10th of May 2019. Following editions will be held according to specific requests. Each course will be held with a minimum of 7 participants.

The training sessions will take place in the Dipartimento di Filosofia, Comunicazione e Spettacolo, by the University of Roma Tre, located very close to a metro station and easily reachable.
